Lucy was born out of desperation and annoyance. I was looking through the racks at WHSmith for something good to read on my impending train journey to Aberdeen, and I was, as ever, failing. I don't even look at the women's magazines anymore because they're all such sickening mockeries of themselves. I miss Jane, but even that went down the tubes when they got a new editor. No wonder it folded. I ended up with Wallpaper, which is a fabulous magazine, but one, it's expensive, and two, everything in it is expensive.
As I sat on the train reading about very well designed shelving units I couldn't afford, I thought I could do better. Not just with my reading choices, but with a whole publication. Why don't women have something smart to read? I know I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I know I'm not the only one who picks up a copy of Cosmopolitan in order to find out what sort of bullshit they're preaching this month. "50 ways to please him in bed"? Please.
So I called a few of my friends who worked on publications in college with me and said, let's do this. Let's put women's mags to shame. Let's write for the normal girl who can't afford $400 shoes and shops mostly at Target and H&M. Let's run some health and sex articles that are actually helpful. Let's hear stories about people who are doing cool things. Let's be a women's publication that men won't be ashamed to read every now and then.
Or let's at least try.
Unfortunately, print is a hard thing to get started in, so we'll be web-based. To feed our love of print, as soon as we get the online version of Lucy sorted out, we'll be launching a monthly downloadable PDF version. So when you can't find something you love on the newsstand, you can read Lucy on your phone or your computer screen and still feel like you've got a real magazine. And the best part is, it's free. We like free things.
I hope you'll stick around and give Lucy a read. It might look a bit unfinished around here while we're finding our feet and getting the site to work properly, but we're doing it all ourselves, becase we know we can. And we want to hear what you think. After all, we can't be the women's mag you've always wanted unless we know exactly what it is you've always wanted.
