Until My Head Stops Spinning

I promised myself I wouldn’t make one of those trite, heartfelt posts about the election and voting. I’m more of a light-hearted, tickle-your-funny-bone sort of girl. But very little is funny about the situation we find ourselves in and this election is every bit as important as all the hyperbolic and hyperventilating media pundits would have us believe.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not an enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama. Sure, I like his message. I like where he wants to take the country and the mostly positive message he is trying to convey. My gut tells me to trust him, to give him the chance to prove that a new kind of politics can be more effective than the old school partisanship of the last 20 years. Perhaps it’s the cynic in me, but my head tells me it all seems a bit forced, a bit like he has his head in the clouds and he wants us all to join him in his philosophical musings. That said, he is a far better choice than John McCain. On that, my gut and my head agree.

Perhaps my middle-class, well-educated upbringing gives me some sort of unique perspective, a political blindspot if you will. But I just do not understand why anyone would vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin. To borrow Aaron Sorkin’s words from The American President, “these are serious times, and they require serious people.” We need a more thoughtful, more open-minded direction for this country. One that does not rely on gut instinct and red meat, partisan hackjobs and mud-slinging surrogates. I watched a great deal of both conventions in the last two weeks. And where the Democratic Convention made me feel hopeful and proud of my country, the Republican Convention left me cold, uninspired, and more than a little angry.
