Forecasts predict a wintry mix…
Posted by Sara in Entertainment and Pop Culture Music.
As I wrote those words on top of the CD with my beloved Sharpie, my husband rolled his eyes.
I don’t care– that’s exactly what this CD is: a lyrical, musical mix of the things that make me think of snow and darkness and twinkling lights. Some of the songs’ association with this season are fairly overt; some just happen to capture the feeling for me. But I’ve found that making mixes like this are wonderful memory keepers, much like journal entries or photographs… I can look back on old playlists, listen, and remember how I felt exactly when I made them.

Posted by Sara in Editors.
My entire life, I’ve gotten shit for being a procrastinator, for being a couple steps behind the game, a few minutes behind the clock, the whole “day late, dollar short” bit. I’ve been reminded that “the early bird gets the worm,” that “if I want to get ahead in life,” I have to be willing to show up early (or on time) to show initiative. For my entire life I’ve thought these people, the ones who bestow this advice or who angrily tap their condescending little finger to their glass face of their wristwatch, to be assholes. And during the Christmas season, I am proven totally, 100% correct.

If you would have told me 7 or 8 years ago that Guns N’ Roses were coming out with a new album, I probably would have been stoked, or at least morbidly curious, but considering the ridiculous shenanigans the band (namely, lead singer, Axl Rose) has pulled in recent years, I’ve been less inclined to care much about the band, or their no-way-it-can-be-good-with-how-long-its-taken-to-release-album, Chinese Democracy.

So, as most of you probably are, I am counting down Dubya’s time in the White House.
My friends and I are debating taking the train down and celebrating with the millions of others who can’t WAIT to see G. W. ride off into the sunset of his faux ranch, nestled on the Texas prairie.

Posted by Sara in Entertainment and Pop Culture Music.
Discovering new music is one of my favorite pastimes—it seems that no matter how many bands I think I know, I end up stumbling upon dozens of groups that I’ve never heard of. Some of these bands have been together for years; some are fresh acts still making their way on the scene. Here are three of my most recent finds that are worth spending money for on iTunes.

I will be the first to tell you, I’m not a morning person… I’m the person the “snooze” button was invented for and it’s assumed I will be at least 15 minutes late for whatever function I’m attending. So I was not particularly thrilled when my husband nudged me out of bed around 6 a.m. this morning. And although the thought DID cross my mind to just not get up, I got over myself and I did it.
Why?
‘Cause today is THE day. Today I voted.

Let me preface this by saying that I am in no way a baseball fan. I’ve been to a handful of games and really only enjoy them during the 7th inning stretch or if I’m at a minor league game and there’s a t-shirt gun. I understand the basic gist of the game, but I don’t know the in-depth rules or stats. I don’t know players names or what RBI means. And frankly, I don’t really care.
But last night, while my husband, my friend, and I stood outside of Woolly Mammoth’s bar on South Street in Philadelphia, straining to see the widescreen TV over the hundreds fans crammed inside, I held my breath. And when Brad Lidge struck out Eric Hinske and the world around us exploded, I exploded too.

Upon a good friend’s recommendation, my husband and I watched the document, Young @ Heart last night. This film follows the chorus group Young@Heart from Northhampton, MA who, instead of the classic chorus standards, sings songs by Radiohead, Coldplay, the Ramones, and Sonic Youth. And the average age of its members? Around 80.
Young@Heart shows the group hard at work for their latest concert, “Still Alive.” They have 7 weeks to learn, listen, and master their line up, and we get to follow their progress. For many, this is the first time these people are hearing the songs, so learning them and being able to perform them well proves challenging. But chorus director Bob Cilman refuses to let them give up so easily and though he may seem like a “taskmaster” at times, he refuses to coddle them because of their age (although at times, I can’t tell if that’s admirable or bordering elder abuse…).
