Good Songs and Bad Memories
Posted by Erin.
Regardless of how you feel about Gwen Stefani, her song “Early Winter” is pretty damn good. Except for the fact that it reminds me a lot of some pretty horrible times, mostly because I listened to it on repeat for the duration of that era in my life. I listened to it the other day and it made my tummy feel like it had spikes in it. Any suggestions on how to hitch that great song to something that doesn’t suck quite so much? I mean… the song is sort of about sad things in and of itself, but maybe, just maybe, I can reclaim it for the forces of good. Just sayin’.

Posted by Lindsay.
This is a song I almost missed. Thankfully, my friend Faith asked me last month if I would be interested in seeing Innerpartysystem, which led them to a slot in my car’s CD changer. I had never heard of them (or hadn’t paid enough attention for them to register on my radar). Now I’m pretty smitten, and not just because they’re local. Plus, in a matter of hours, I will be seeing them, so I figured I would take this opportunity to share them with you.

Once and a great while, two musical geniuses come together to make beautiful, spectacular music. Then, they take that creative energy and maybe make a music video or two. Here is an example of the complete opposite. Continue reading »
Entertainment and Pop Culture, Music | Comment (1)John Vanderslice is the Man
Posted by Erin.
Sometimes I get caught up in listening to new music and forget that I have some old stand-bys that never fail to please. John Vanderslice is nothing short of incredible. His music is unconventional but strikes enough familiar notes that you’ll wonder where he’s been all your life. Continue reading »

As much as I try to stay positive about music and life in general, sometimes there are things I don’t enjoy. Also, unfortunately, sometimes I go on crazy late night music-buying binges where I end up with stuff that is bad. Continue reading »

Entertainment and Pop Culture, Music | Comment (1)Songs You May Have Missed: The Mountain Goats - “This Year”
Posted by Lindsay.
Oh, goodness. Another mid-week holiday that confused my internal clock and has me bloated–this time from sharing a bottle of Patrón with one of my most favorite people in the world–has passed and it’s an awkward Friday that feels far too much like a Monday, but with jeans instead of business casual wear. I had picked this song out before my New Year’s plans were cemented, but it makes it even more special because my drinking buddy is the one who introduced me to The Mountain Goats.

Posted by Erin.
Hi! Sorry for the belated blog post. I was out all day yesterday and all day today, so this is the first chance I have had to sit at the computer. And there isn’t much to say, really, except that one of my New Years resolutions is to get my hands on, absorb and enjoy as much new music as possible, and to share my discoveries with you. It’s okay, you can say it… “awwww.” Continue reading »
Entertainment and Pop Culture, Music | Comment (0)Soundtrack For The Boogie Drunkards
Posted by Krystal.
My dear friend Melissa is having a party for New Year’s Eve and she has been planning a soundtrack for the entire evening. Most of the songs are from the 80s and early 90s and have the pure intentions of making you dance. I asked her if I could contribute to the soundtrack and thankfully, she agreed. My intentions are to provide a CD filled with songs that normally my friends would not listen to (we are multi-musical friends) and perhaps they will totally love the music. Or maybe they will be too drunk to care! Here are some highlights from my soundtrack for a ball droppin’, good ole time! Continue reading »
Entertainment and Pop Culture, Music | Comment (1)Forecasts predict a wintry mix…
Posted by Sara.
As I wrote those words on top of the CD with my beloved Sharpie, my husband rolled his eyes.
I don’t care– that’s exactly what this CD is: a lyrical, musical mix of the things that make me think of snow and darkness and twinkling lights. Some of the songs’ association with this season are fairly overt; some just happen to capture the feeling for me. But I’ve found that making mixes like this are wonderful memory keepers, much like journal entries or photographs… I can look back on old playlists, listen, and remember how I felt exactly when I made them.
