Aretha’s hat…oh yeah, and equal pay!
Posted by Kate G. in Politics World.
This totally isn’t going to be a post about her hat, but I have to ask: how much did you LOVE it? I’m its fan on Facebook.
Moving on…Obama is already proving himself a strong proponent for women; last Thursday, he signed his first bill, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, that relaxes the current statute of limitations on suing on grounds of pay discrimination. The Act itself is named for Lilly Ledbetter, who worked at a Goodyear Tire plant in Alabama for 19 years and then sued as she approached retirement and realized she was making less than her male co-workers.

This week I can’t blame my lack of good reporting skills on alcohol. I can, however, blame it on the fact that I have a day job that grates on my liberal idealist nerves every day. So, after the jump, find my ranting and raving (mostly) about Sarah Palin. Yeah, I hold a grudge. Also, if you have an interest in real world news and Israel/Gaza, check out David Hosey’s blog.

Happy New Year! Before I get my snark on, I want to wish the Obama girls good luck at their new school on Monday. They are precious and I’m looking forward to becoming less bitter once their Daddy is president. Just sayin’. Anyway, this week is going to be charmingly devoid of lots of news coverage courtesy of binge drinking. But in honor of the shit ton of tequila I’ve consumed since Christmas, I will obviously discuss President George “DUI” Bush. You’ll be thanking me after the jump.

Happy holidays everyone! I was too busy stressing about the impending holiday festivities to give you a ton of news this week, but I’m going to do my best. How about I start off with everybody’s favorite holiday present? Paparazzi shots of President-Elect Obama have been a hit on the ‘net. No one ever took shots like this of Bill Clinton, did they? (Yes, I realize that’s a good thing.) But here we go: Recounts, pardons, and scumbags, oh my! And how ’bout some Jesus, since it’s Christmastime and all?

I’ve been MIA from politics in an effort to get into the holiday spirit, but since that has failed pretty miserably (bah humbug!) I’m back, and I bring with me some highlights of this past week in politics: from “Yes, Virginia, Obama will be president” to the wars in Iraq and your uterus.
Politics | Comments (2)What is this, the Oregon Trail?
Posted by Kate G. in Politics.
Cholera, are we joking?
What year is it?!
Evidently, the US–and pretty much every other country that is sitting on their ass as Africa goes to shit, per usual–has its priorities out of order: so much so that preventable, old-timey diseases like cholera are killing hundreds in Zimbabwe.
I remember when cholera was fun. Had some good times.
Because it was just a computer game.
Remember how, like, everyone you knew ended up with cholera in “Oregon Trail?” If it wasn’t a snakebite or a broken axel, someone would go off and drink some dirty-ass water and ruin your perfect game by dying of cholera. You’d hit “Esc” and start over, swearing you’d be a Doctor this time around and leave your brother off the wagon.
Well, ask anyone in Africa: there’s no Escape.
Politics | Comment (0)Penguins: the new gay frontier
Posted by Kate G. in Politics.
Just heard this story, HAD to pass it along.
According to the Huffington Post, these two gay guy penguins in China have been pushed to the margins of their penguin friends. Why, you may ask?
Get ready.
The couple have been stealing male-female couples’ eggs to raise on their own. As you may know if you’ve seen “March of the Penguins,” they do this waddle-thing to switch the egg between mother and father so the other parent could go get food. These sneaky little bastards were taking large, round rocks and shuffling them up to other penguins in order to switch them out for real eggs.
See, if same-sex adoption was legal for penguins, this wouldn’t even be an issue.
*(p.s. not sure if the penguins pictured with the article are the real penguins. looks more like the editors trolled Google to find the gayest two penguins in the universe. mission ACCOMPLISHED.)
Politics | Comment (0)Let’s call in gay tomorrow.
Posted by Kate G. in Politics.
Not sick, not tired, not stranded without a car. Just gay.
That’s the plan for national “Day Without a Gay,” scheduled to hit America like a ton of bricks tomorrow (Wednesday December 10). The initiative is the brain child of a West Hollywood comedian and his boyfriend in response to California’s Proposition 8. They borrowed the idea from the Latino population who have staged strikes in the past against deportation and workers’ rights laws for immigrants.
The idea? To see the effect the GLBT community–and their straight allies–have on the American workforce and economy in general. Daywithoutagay.org is asking all queer people to not only “call in gay” but also to refrain from spending any money and do volunteer work instead.
So let’s do it. Why?
Politics | Comment (0)Congratulations, Hillary!
Posted by Lindsay in Politics.
Today, Barack Obama officially announced that Hillary Clinton is his pick for Secretary of State. While it’s not really a surprise, it is a great way to start off the holiday season (read: Obama gave Lindsay a Christmas present!).
Some argue that the Cabinet is not full of “change” as promised in Obama’s campaign speeches. I’m fuzzy on what these folks expected the President-elect to do. Was he supposed to pick cabinet members using a dart board? Ask Sarah Palin how she picks baby names and modify the method for political purposes? What? It’s not like Clinton is Strom Thurmond or–dare I say–John McCain when it comes to years in the Senate.
As Obama says on CNN: “What we are going to do is combine experience with fresh thinking. But understand … the vision for change comes first and foremost … from me. That’s my job.”
