Gift Ideas For The Fickle Reader
Posted by Krystal in Book Blog Entertainment and Pop Culture.
When it comes to gift-giving, I think music and books are the best presents to hand out. They both can be used and enjoyed multiple times. They can be traded and borrowed. And they also expand the mind. That being said, if you are a procrastinator on all different levels, I suggest giving one of the above. Here are a couple of books that should make one dance with holiday glee upon unwrapping!
For the young and the young at heart: The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling
This book is a collection of fairy tales from the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. It is filled with delightful stories that have a wonderful lesson, a moral, that will enrich a child’s life. It can easily become a part of a child’s life, read before nap-time or bedtime. For those who enjoy books on the Young Adult end, it is a little more in the child realm, but the depth and layers of the stories can definitely be explored by an older audience. It is a more fulfilling read than, let’s say, anything by Stephanie Meyer. Ever.
For those who wish to be depressed during the winter: The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Oh boy. This book was fantastic. McCarthy is the master of describing a scene and situations. My boyfriend, Nick was reading this book, in bed, under the covers, while McCarthy described a situation where the main characters were cold, freezing. Nick said he became cold just reading the book. McCarthy is just that good. I do not want to go into too many details about the book because I really feel as if one would enjoy the experience if they just jumped right into the book.
For those who perfer to advance their intelligence and want to be the smartest one in the room: How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster
This book is filled with wonderful tips and techniques for enhancing your literature reading. Foster discusses how to find symbolism, themes, characterization– you name it– in everyday literature. It is a great tool for getting the most of out the books you read. Do not worry, it is not a dry read by any means. Foster uses examples from a wide variety of books that fall within the canon of literature. The essays really make you want to pick up and read some of the books he discusses. Lucky for the reader, he has a list of all of the books and many more worth reading at the end of the book. It is the perfect book to help continue on your reading journey.
