An Overlooked Holiday Classic
Posted by Zac in Entertainment and Pop Culture Movies.
If you’ve grown tired of spending the season watching the same old holiday specials then I have the answer for you. The 1964 gem I’m speaking of was shamefully ignored during that year’s awards season, and is still woefully forgotten to this day. My people, allow me to present to you…
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
“Hooray for Santa Claus!”
While observing his children (one of them played by Pia Zadora) watching an Earth broadcast from Santa’s workshop, Martian leader Kimar seeks the advice of a Martian elder, who advises him to kidnap Santa and bring him to their home planet, so the Martian children can be children again. The Earth station the kids were watching was the K-I-D TV. Get it? KID TV! Hahahahahaha! That’s the kind of subtle humor you’ll find in Santa Claus Conquers the Martians! Somewhere along the line, two Earth children get kidnapped as well, the evil Martian Voldar tries to thwart his leader’s plan, and another Martian named Dropo brings comic relief and zany antics to a whole new level.
Did I mention the special effects? If you were impressed by the giant robot in the recent The Day the Earth Stood Still, then the steel collosus from Mars seen in this film will take your breath away. And the polar bear. I tell you folks, Jack Pierce, Dick Smith, Tom Savini, Stan Winston, Rick Baker, and the boys at KNB FX combined couldn’t bring you a polar bear as realistic as the one on view here.
Take my word for it, you’ll never experience as holiday classic like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
