Mamma Mia: I’m so happy, I could sing along (coming to a theater near you)

Who would have known that 70s pop sensations ABBA would rise to become cult favorites? Following the trend of many beloved iconic groups, ABBA saw a revival when the musical Mamma Mia! hit broadway. Since then, a new generation has been exposed to the classics “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me” and of course, “Mamma Mia,” bringing this Swedish pop sensation back into the limelight.
Smartly, the band refuses to do a “comeback tour” (as Björn Ulvaeus stated in a recent interview, she prefers fans remember them as they once were–”young” and “full of energy”). But that doesn’t stop them from allowing their music to be marketed in TV and film.
Since its release in early July, Mamma Mia! , the movie version of the popular musical, has broken records. According to a press release issued by Universal, it has become the fastest movie musical to reach $100 million at the U.S. box office and is now the highest grossing film of 2008 in the U.K., Austria, Greece, Hungary, Norway and Sweden. If the movie continues to trend as it has, this Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan-led romantic comedy will become the most successful film Universal has ever released in the U.K.
The music of the film has proved as much a draw as the film itself and brought resurgence to the world’s favorite ABBA songs. Currently, the Mamma Mia! soundtrack is the No. 1 album on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart. It is also the No. 1 album overall in Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Finland and Hungary.
On August 19, Universal Pictures announced that it will release a special sing-along edition of the film in select theaters nationwide, starting Friday, August 29, for a limited time. Audiences at these specially selected theaters are invited to bring friends and family to sing along to the songs they love. Mamma Mia!: The Sing-Along Edition will feature the lyrics to every musical number on the screen, and audiences are encouraged to sing–and dance–along with the music.
Details on theaters and showtimes that will feature Mamma Mia!: The Sing-Along Edition will be coming soon. For the latest news, please visit www.mammamiamovie.com.
