SAG Nominations Confirm My Movie Fears
Posted by Krystal in Entertainment and Pop Culture Movies.
When I first saw the Golden Globe nominations a couple of weeks ago, I was terrified to see movies like Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Tropic Thunder, Mamma Mia! and Pineapple Express received nominations. My fears quickly subsided when I thought about how the awards are actually arranged. They split the movie nominations to comedy and drama categories, similar to how they split the television nominations. Based on this criteria, I really believe the Hollywood Foreign Press got it right with their nominations. This year in comedy (or musical) was spectacularly subpar. Drillbit Taylor or Over Her Dead Body, anyone? How about Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist?
By forcing the nominations into ten best picture, best actor and actress contenders, you are forcing to have some pretty shitty people vie for Golden Globe glory. So, I use the Screen Actors Guild Awards as my guiding post to what films and which performers are the true contenders for Oscar Gold. So last week when the nominations came out, I was a little shocked when I found out who made the cut.
Robert Downey Jr.? Penelope Cruz? Are we for reals? It is true that the only thing that I found funny in the trailer for Tropic Thunder was RDJ. I do remember him making me giggle while I was eating my popcorn waiting for Step-Brothers to come on. RDJ is insanely charming. Perhaps he charmed the pants off the Screen Actors Guild? What about Cruz and that crap-ass movie? I guess I should be super thankful that it is Cruz getting the nominations and not Scarlett Johansson.
Whatever the case may be, my biggest movie fear right now is that I will have to watch Vicky Cristina Barcelona AND Tropic Thunder to complete my Award Season Movie Viewing Goal. I just don’t know if I can take it. The only thing that would make this worse is if Natalie Portman was in each movie. Oi with the poodles already.

Tropic Thunder is actually a pretty funny movie… I mean, it’s not Oscar worthy, but it was a pretty well-done spoof and each actor played their part well, including Robert Downey Jr.
It’s def. a step or two above other parody films like Walk Hard, and it’s not typical Ben Stiller trying-to-be-funny-and-it’s-painful. Of course, there’s some of that, but I think they use the different elements of slap-stick comedy/goofs towards actually enhancing the plot, not hindering it. And I am shocked to say that even Tom Cruise didn’t bother me in it.
Based on your disgust/hate with the Hollywood machine and the tired genres that they milk over and over again, I think you might actually like this film if you gave it a try… They pretty much are supporting your opinion that the industry gives us the same ol’ stuff over and over again and they’re calling them out on it. I esp. love it when movies like this get recognized because it’s almost supporting the message/mockery they’re laying out there for all to see.
Tropic Thunder had it’s moments and Tom Cruise was pretty damn funny and anything Robert Downey Jr is in rates a look. Hell even Matthew McConaughey was amusing.
As for Penelope Cruz she should stick to her Spanish language movies as her Hollywood movies have yet to produce anything worth seeing except for her drugged out turn in BLOW.
Pineapple Express was damn funny. DAMN funny.
