TRANSSIBERIAN (2008)

Brad Anderson’s follow up to his 2004 freaky deaky THE MACHINIST is quite the disappointment. While Mr Anderson was able to enlist the talents of Emily Mortimer, Woody Harrelson and Ben Kingsley he doesn’t really give them much to work with. If he co-wrote this with the express purpose of making their characters annoying well then good job buddy.
Roy and Jessie (Woody and Emily) play a couple taking the Trans-Siberian railroad on their way back home from missionary work in China only to encounter what most Americans encounter in these situations….TROUBLE!!!!!! Ok, you kinda expected that especially since this is categorized as as a “thriller”. Roy loves his wife but he seems to love talking and trains. Not the toy trains but the actual trains and he will tell anybody who listen the history of any given train. Jessie on the other hand has a history and when it comes up even more shit hits the fan. Ben Kinsgley rarely does anything wrong (except for BLOODRAYNE and LOVE GURU) and here he plays Russian cop Ilya Grinko who befriends the couple while on the train heading for a conference. I don’t know if I’ve just seen way too much of him lately or what but I just could not stop thinking that this is Ben Kingsley talking like a Russian and not the character. Maybe the pedestrian and lack of character development made me not care….on the bright side the scenery’s kinda pretty.
