Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is the biggest loser in the world. He’s a cubicle monkey ruled over by a tyrant of a woman that enjoys giving orders and eating donuts. His girlfriend has been cheating on him with his best friend and he’s totally broke. Enter the mysterious woman, Fox (Angelina Jolie), who tells young Wesley that his father that abandoned him as a child was just murdered by an assassin. Apparently, his father was the king of assassins and since his death Wesley is to take his place in the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins headed by Sloan (Morgan Freeman).
Wesley is schooled by the Fraternity’s experts in gunplay, knife fighting and how to take a punch to the face. After receiving training, Wesley is shown the Loom of Fate, a loom that gives names of targets that are destined to cause great tragedy. So basically the fate of the world relies on these people being able to read the errors in fabric.
This film was a very loose adaptation of a Mark Millar and J.G. Jones comic book mini series. The comic book has the same premise but it has more to do with the supervillians being in control of the world after having destroyed all the superheroes. The first twenty minutes or so are actually taken from the comic, but after that it’s a whole new ballgame. As an adaptation, it’s easily one of the worst since it takes the basic premise and expands from there. As an action movie, I loved it since it had a good sense of humor and hearing Morgan Freeman curse made my wife’s night.
I am ecstatic that this movie was a hit in theaters since it guarantees more Mark Millar movies (Kick-Ass is already in production) and that Russian director Timur Bekmambetov will have the finances to complete his Night Watch trilogy.
