Soundtrack For The Boogie Drunkards
Posted by Krystal in Entertainment and Pop Culture Music.
My dear friend Melissa is having a party for New Year’s Eve and she has been planning a soundtrack for the entire evening. Most of the songs are from the 80s and early 90s and have the pure intentions of making you dance. I asked her if I could contribute to the soundtrack and thankfully, she agreed. My intentions are to provide a CD filled with songs that normally my friends would not listen to (we are multi-musical friends) and perhaps they will totally love the music. Or maybe they will be too drunk to care! Here are some highlights from my soundtrack for a ball droppin’, good ole time!
“List of Demands (Reparations)” — Saul Williams
I dare someone to not enjoy this song. I find it really impossible. The rhythmic drums are hypnotizing and Saul Williams is really at his finest. My feelings for this song can be best summed up by lyrics from Saul himself: “And when you hear this song/if you ain’t dead then sing along.”
“Down Rodeo” — Rage Against The Machine
I really had a hard time choosing which Rage Against The Machine song to put on here. When I started scanning through them, my first instinct was to just bring all of their CDs and present them as my contribution to the soundtrack. Buuuut I have to choose just one. I feel as if “Down Rodeo” is the quintessential RATM song. Outstanding social and political lyrics from Zack de la Rocha and a unique, thoughtful solo from Tom Morello.
“When Girls Telephone Boys” — Deftones
This song has the classic Chino screams combined with Stef’s hard, rhythmic riffs. This song also showcases the true star of Deftones, drummer Abe Cunningham. He is a mad man on the drums and this song only shows the tip of his talent iceberg. This high energy song can definitely get a party moving.
“Mouth For War” — Pantera
No party album is complete unless Pantera is included. This song has Phil Anselmo’s braggadocio annnnd a fantastic Dimebag solo. The last minute of the song is one of the best minutes in metal, hands down. Whenever there is a party and drinking is involved, I get the urge to do impressions of metal singers. My Phil Anselmo impression is pretty bad ass (read: hilariously awful) and that just gives me another reason to have this song on my CD. Perhaps this song can inspire others to do impressions with me.
“Break You” — Lamb of God
From one great southern metal band to another! In my opinion, Lamb of God is the greatest metal band out there today and I feel like “Break You” is one of several examples of just how awesome they are. I have always found this song to be a great party favorite in years past and I hope for the same tonight.
“32 Ghosts IV” — Nine Inch Nails
The intense pounding beat that drives this song makes it more darker than its counterparts on Ghosts I-IV yet the perfect transitional song on my album. Kudos to you, Trent! In all seriousness, Nine Inch Nails had an outstanding 2008 filled with two amazing albums and a mind blowing world tour. I seriously thank Odin everyday for Nine Inch Nails.
“Everything In Its Right Place” — Radiohead
How could you not enjoy this song? Just like with “List of Demands (Reparations),” I dare someone to not love this song! Don’t get too tied up trying to analyze the lyrical content of the song; just take in the song as a whole and focus on how beautiful it is. I think this song could bring the night to high point of inaccurate singalongs!
“Rebellion (Lies)” — Arcade Fire
I first heard this song driving on my way back from getting Chinese takeout. I wanted to dance all the way home! I instantly bought it from iTunes and made my fiance take a listen. Since that day, we have had plenty of mega dance parties (read: us dancing by ourselves with our cat) to this song. In fact, the last time I went to a party, we listened to this song before hand to get ourselves partied up! I feel like this is one of the best songs to dance to. Ever.
