America: This Week in Politics
Posted by Lindsay in Politics.
This week I can’t blame my lack of good reporting skills on alcohol. I can, however, blame it on the fact that I have a day job that grates on my liberal idealist nerves every day. So, after the jump, find my ranting and raving (mostly) about Sarah Palin. Yeah, I hold a grudge. Also, if you have an interest in real world news and Israel/Gaza, check out David Hosey’s blog.

Happy New Year! Before I get my snark on, I want to wish the Obama girls good luck at their new school on Monday. They are precious and I’m looking forward to becoming less bitter once their Daddy is president. Just sayin’. Anyway, this week is going to be charmingly devoid of lots of news coverage courtesy of binge drinking. But in honor of the shit ton of tequila I’ve consumed since Christmas, I will obviously discuss President George “DUI” Bush. You’ll be thanking me after the jump.

We are no longer growing closer and closer to the 2008 Presidential Election by the month, week, day; we are growing closer by the hour, minute, second. It’s less than a week away now, and still we are debating and arguing over points that seem less than important to the whole picture.
So what, you ask, will make or break this election for either party? What could and probably will sway this election more than any other factor? No, it’s not that McCain will suddenly come out as a Muslim, or that Obama will admit that he’s actually a socialist - either way those two are arranged, they’re both false…
US Election 2008 | Comment (0)A Product of Fear
Posted by Lindsay in US Election 2008.
I really cannot get over Sarah Palin and the blatant terror she causes in my little heart. At first, I thought she was harmless, but now I’m not so sure. In coming to grips with my fear, I was reminded of Donnie Darko and the line where decisions are based on either Fear or Love. While Donnie says things aren’t black and white like that, in this case, they seem to be. Sarah Palin lies out of fear. Fear her inadequacy will be discovered (too late!), fear her party will lose to a guy with the middle name Hussein, fear that Joe Six-Pack might wake up from his drunken stupor and realize that he doesn’t want a dimwit running the show… Similarly, I’m voting out of fear. It is well known that I was not a huge Obama fan coming into this final stretch, but since the introduction of Sarah Palin into this mix, I’m scared shitless. Everything about me knows that while Obama is not my ideal candidate, he’s also not straight up stupid, and therefore deserves my Pennsylvanian vote.

So, this is my first blog on Lucy. I suppose I could do an intro blog, but who reads them? Not me. I think you’d all get a better idea of who I am through interpretive dance a head-first dive into the pool of crazy that Election ‘08 is rapidly becoming.
When Palin said she was proud that America had such wonderful women’s rights, I nearly vomited all over my television: a knee-jerk reaction that is becoming more common as the weeks pass. Note to self: buy more Tums. After suppressing the bile, I scratched my head and pondered to what rights exactly she was referring in that little buzz-word-laden ramble.
I can’t imagine why she pluralized “rights.” In regards to women’s rights, she seems only to agree with America’s stance that, yes, in fact, women ARE humans and deserve the right to vote. Other major advances, such as Roe v. Wade and comprehensive sex education seem to be as relevant to her as evolution.
But for funsies, let’s step into our time machine and see what “women’s rights” would mean in a Palinocracy, where man and dinosaur co-exist and everyone speaks in tongues.

She has little knowledge of foreign policy or Supreme Court cases. She bounced between four relatively unknown colleges before finally getting a degree in communications. She enjoys shooting wolves from helicopters. Yes, Sarah Palin is JoAnn Six-pack, your average American who understands what it’s like to be you, to raise a your family and your seventeen-year-old daughter’s family, to be criticized and scrutinized by those out-of-touch elites because you’re an “outsider,” to be regarded with contempt because others just don’t understand that you’re a maverick, doggonit!

A quote I enjoyed from The Daily Show last night:
Jon Stewart: I like this whole Sarah Palin show [after clips of Katie Couric interviews]; it’s like the first season of LOST only it makes less sense.
Ha. How true.
Further, a speech, a president, a vice president–they are supposed to inspire. To make us think, to make us believe, to give us goosebumps. Like Dwight D. Eisenhower’s farewell address to the nation, and countless others.
These things are supposed to make us think, to open our eyes, to inspire us to achieve more; they should make us stand up for what’s right in this world, and fight what’s not. Not make us question our choice of Vice Presidential candidates; it shouldn’t come to news-hosts having more experience and knowledge on almost all issues than the candidate. I’m tired of hosts calling Palin’s performances embarrassing and degrading to the American public.
I’m sad that her running mate / presidential nominee has to step in to protect her from relentless badgering by those very hosts that he and their party approved.
What do we think this is? What can we call this?
US Election 2008 | Comment (0)Series of Truths, Part III: Palin… Excuse me, what?
Posted by Keanan in US Election 2008.
It’s interesting to note how the two candidates are handling their VP choices.
Barack Obama’s running mate, Biden, is constantly giving press interviews, speaking on his own in public to media sources about such topics as foreign policy, the economy, and campaigning around the United States, for the most part, on his own. Standing up for issues that the two believe in, and explaining their views on European and Middle Eastern issues. Sure, he’s made some comments that differ from the opinions of Obama, but they’re not the person. Of course they’re going to differ.
John McCain, on the other hand, has recently sat in on interviews with Palin and Katie Couric, where he accused her of making “Gotcha” points; Palin calls herself a “Maverick”, just like John McCain, yet cannot be questioned by more than the few select media sources that the Republican campaign managers decide on.. because she’s still learning. Rephrasing questions as answers doesn’t get you anywhere but further in the hole. And answering a question siding with Obama, while you’re running mate is right next to you in an interview, then asked to explain why your answer differs from his…? He steps in, explaining that she’s not speaking out of line and that what she said isn’t what she really said.. and that she knows what she’s talking about, and can handle it herself.
US Election 2008 | Comment (0)Less than 24 Hours til the VP Debate
Posted by Lindsay in US Election 2008.
A vice presidential debate has never affected the outcome of an election. Could this be the first one? The initial “oh, cool, she’s a chick” reaction to Sarah Palin has worn off, and more people would like to know if she can name just one newspaper. Oh, and I would like to remember what Biden’s face looks like.
In less than 24 hours, I will be satisfied. (I hope.) Because I haven’t been fond of either candidate, the quality of the VP candidate has become fairly important to me. I was toying with the idea of liveblogging the debate, but there’s a chance that we will be having a “debate party” (slang for booze). Either way, I’m sure October 3rd will bring a load of reactions, both in this blog and others all over the globe. The world is watching, and we are skeptical.
To get you in the debating mood, here are some links about what the wacky liberal media have to say about tomorrow night:

US Election 2008 | Comment (0)Series of Truths, Part II: Palin and Foreign Policy
Posted by Keanan in US Election 2008.
So I’m at it again. I’m again contemplating how Sarah Palin could possibly be a good, or ready, vice presidential running mate for John McCain.
This time, I turn to her leadership and foreign policy—and how she’s being pampered by McCain and his conservative buddies. For McCain to constantly pursue the notion that Barack Obama is not ready nor prepared to be the President of the United States, and then choose Sarah Palin as his running mate, completely blows my mind. How can anyone in his right mind make BOTH of these statements?
