but it’s just a box that holds cards…
Posted by Sara in Weddings.
so as we draw closer to our wedding, we’re beginning to pick up all the last minute things that we need, mainly all the crap that sits out on the front table that later will get stored in the closet: the guest book and the big box to hold the money envelopes.
I’ve actually been looking around for these things for some time, just to get an idea, but kept pushing it off. I saw ones that I liked, namely ones that were pretty basic and had brown ribbon involved (since the brown matches the bridesmaid’s dresses). No big deal, I assumed, we can pick up the little things closer to W day.
When I finally went to purchase these items, specifically the money box holder, I was shocked. These freaking things range from $40 to $85!!!
$85!!!
It’s not that I’m completely surprised that the price has been jacked up– I guess I’m amazed at HOW jacked the price is. It just seems so ludicrous to me to spend more than $15- $20 on a box that has a very basic purpose. It’s not collecting interest while it holds the money. It does not count the money for you. I mean, essentially, this is just a fancier version of a lock box, so why not just get a lock box and paint it gold or throw a tacky wedding bow on top?
I spoke to someone about this recently and mentioned that I would probably just make my own money-holding box. The reaction? Near disgust.
“Well, you have to have a nice box to collect the cards in!”
Yeah, because people are going to demand their card back if they don’t have a fancy place to put it.
Even worse are the people who try to push those bird cage things. What the hell is the meaning behind that, anyway? I’m sure I could google it and find out, but truth is, I just don’t care enough.
I’m beginning to think that the only way to end the wedding-related insanity is to just completely denounce it. Women, I think we need to stand together, money boxes in one hand, lighters in the other, and stand in front of every ridiculous, overpriced bridal store, salon, and craft shop and let them know we refuse to spend any more money on this ridiculous shit!
…or maybe we’ll just put it on our registry.

I just wanted to mention for others in this situation that lots of wedding venues have card boxes that they’ll let you use for free, or rent for a small fee. You could also borrow or buy one off someone else who was recently married and probably not happy about spending $85 on a box
