I believe in Barack Obama
Posted by Jill in US Election 2008.
Just a quickie before I head out the door to dance in the streets of DC to celebrate (impending) Obama’s victory.
Today something extraordinary happened in my personal life. For the first time I can recall, my registered-Independent-but-always-vote-Republican grandparents both voted for Obama. A year ago they were very pro-McCain…however, a year ago McCain was a different man than he was now. He stood by his principles and didn’t give in to his party. He had a great bi-partisan immigration plan and was against torture. He wasn’t Captain Angrypants.
Funny how things change in a year. In my opinion (which I’m sure many of you share), McCain doomed himself and the campaign when he picked Palin. That’s what did it for my grandmother - no way was she going to have Caribou Barbie running the show if McCain kicked it. That, along with the war and the economy, had her punching her ballot for Obama. It makes me so proud that her, along with millions of other Americans, are looking at the real issues this election and voting for the person who they think can handle them, not voting for whoever hates gay people the most. For once, it feels like we’re having a real election.
I feel so confident that Obama can win this tonight and go on to make our country better. As corny as this sounds, he’s the change I believe in. Yes we can, yes we have, and yes we did.
